Following the sad news that John, ON4UN recently passed away, we noticed a comment left by DX-World reader, Saki DD5XX. In the comment, he provided a link to a video clip (above) of the 1997 VK0IR Heard Island DXpedition where it so happens that ON4UN was the very first contact in the log. In the video he is talking to Ralph, VK0IR – another DX great. We thought this was a pretty fitting tribute and shows the respect and high esteem in which John was held.
Note: Peter ON6TT also features in this short clip.
John will be missed. He was my ham-neighbour in Belgium, a friend, an inspiration, one of my idols and supporter of many projects i undertook. I owe a lot to John. His drive, his scientific and systematic approach to resolve problems, but also his support to make our hobby more than a hobby.
Ham radio was his passion, and a big part of his life. We owe a lot to him, I owe a lot to him.
He will remain for ever, one of the people I admire.
Peter, ON6TT
The world of amateur radio sustained a great loss with the passing of John Devoldere, ON4UN.
John’s books, projects, lectures, contesting skills, love of the low bands, and intellect are legendary and we will forever miss his counsel and guidance.
John was a godsend to amateur radio and above all else, a great human being.
