Sad to report that well known radio amateur Fred Laun K3ZO has become Silent Key. We know he was a friend of many a DXer. Fred recently fell ill and developed an infection, followed by Covid. His condition got worse in hospital as the days progressed.
RIP Fred.
Shocked and sad to hear Fred’s passing. It is like yesterday visiting Fred’s QTH back in 2011 and operated from his station.
Thank you for the many overseas QSOs over the years.

The well-known K3ZO FRED S.K. notice.
(S.K silent key, which in Ham’s terminology means passing away or goodbye.
In Morse code … – …)
I have communicated with him countless times at every contest in each band.
Since about 2020, I have also received emails of encouragement from him, such as referring to the JF9JTS signal in terms of confirming the path between JA and North America on 21 MHz this cycle.
I also present my QSL card as a reminder of many QSOs.
There are some videos of K3ZO’s actual signals left in some contests, so

เจอกัน Fred. It was my pleasure having met you personally in Visalia. I always remember the countless contest contacts with you.
You surely will be missed. Another legend of ham radio has gone. DX Heaven: Franz, Zorro, another one of our friends is joining you now. Will the sun spots be with you over there too 😉
