UPDATE – The survey has been online for 7 days with over 1500 voters.
It was clear to see that a few hours after the survey went live, people who frequent various DX forums, DX clubs, friends of friends, DX message boards, social media platforms et al started to vote for DXpeditions which were mostly based on country choice rather than the main aim – to see which expedition could claim the accolade of 2020 DX-World DXpedition of the Year – regardless of demographics.
While there’s no doubt 7Q7RU met hardships and had a prolonged stay in Malawi, are we really to believe that 27% of voters thought this expedition was worthy of outright winning? In fact, 7Q7RU team leader (R7AL) suggests as much here (translate).
It could be argued, for example, that VP8PJ and TI9A should be much higher placed than they actually are, least not because of the expense and travel incurred.
Repeat votes were not evident within the survey which is a good thing, but certainly selective demographic voting played a major part in perhaps a skewed outcome. It’s with this, that in all sincerity, the survey should be “null and void“.
With a level playing field, say in 2022, when a full year’s worth of DXpeditions are evident, maybe then a truer picture will be seen.
DECEMBER 20, 2020 – As we all know, Covid-19 has played havoc in every aspect of our lives. That includes amateur radio expeditions to far flung and remote places.
Since mid-March to now there’s hardly been any DXpeditions (with the exception of one or two) and as such that means the DX-World DXpedition of the Year 2020 has been very much curtailed.
Every DXpedition listed was active this year. Most took place between January to April. Some got delayed due to travel / quarantine restrictions while others occurred without any issues.
You have two votes. Use them wisely 🙂
